Postgraduate level courses on ‘Building Resilience to Climate Change’, United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU)

The courses run for five weeks in Tokyo (Japan) from 20th February to 23rd March 2012. Following two courses will be offered, each with duration of 2 weeks:

• Course-1: Science, Impacts and Vulnerability’
• Course-2: Approaches to Adaptation

In addition, week-long hands on training in ‘Remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)’ will also be provided.  Please refer to the attached brochure for detailed information. Priority will be given to students who are currently enrolled in a postgraduate programme.  However, the courses are also open to young faculty members, researchers and practitioners who have completed master’s degree and are working in the relevant field. Limited competitive fellowships are available for the deserving candidates from the developing countries. Water Security Short Course at  University of East Anglia (28 May - 4 June 2012)

This course is designed for entry and mid-level water and development policy-makers and professionals in government, donor, NGO or implementing agencies. A number of places will also be made available to environmental journalists, consultants and activists wishing to take their knowledge on water resources further.

It will provide participants with an exceptional opportunity to acquire an understanding of a key water issues globally. While the focus is on policy, the extensive field and analytical competence of the lecturers ensures that participants benefit from grounded theory and experience.

This course provides an ideal opportunity for those already working in the water sector to maintain and develop their expertise in Water Security issues, and to keep abreast of current thinking. More information is available here.  

MSc Water Security and International Development at University of East Anglia (September 2012 – September 2013)

The MSc in Water Security and International Development is designed to prepare graduates to enter a wide range of career paths in water and development. It is taught by leading interdisciplinary experts at the School of International Development and the School of Environmental Sciences.

The MSc examines ‘water security’ in its broad sense, integrating critical global policy concerns such as climate change, food and energy security. Considering water as a physical and political resource, the course serves to develop an understanding of complex water challenges, the role and mechanisms of cooperation from the human to international level, and approaches to allocation in support of achieving water security. Climate Change, Water and Society (CCWAS) at UC Davis

The IGERT in Climate Change, Water, and Society now is accepting applications for its initial cohort.
Climate change and related water problems pose some of the most formidable challenges to science and society today. The IGERT in Climate Change, Water and Society (CCWAS) at UC Davis is designed to provide a new generation of scientists with the disciplinary depth and the multidisciplinary breadth to address effects of climate change on water resources, including unification of hydrologic and climate science toward a more advanced understanding of hydroclimatology and better translation of science into action.

In partnership with our cooperating institutions - the Colorado School of Mines, California State University, Fresno, and University of Concepción, Chile - the CCWAS IGERT will provide transformative interdisciplinary training spanning:

• hydrologic science
• atmospheric science
• ecology
• engineering
• geology
• resource economics, and political science.

We seek talented students to apply to the CCWAS training program. CCWAS trainees will receive a stipend of $30,000 per year plus fees for two years. For more information, go to the website here.
