Role of Environmental Flows in Reducing Poverty and Meeting the MDGs
2007-08-14
Side event during World Water Week.Convenors: Swedish Water House (SWH), World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Landscape Ecology Group, Umeå University
The aim of the side event is to discuss the links between flows regimes and the livelihoods of the rural poor. How can the values of restoring and maintaining environmental flows be measured and addressed in countries strategies to reduce poverty and in the overall goal to meet the MDGs? How can watershed management and services to support downstream ecosystems be linked to decision-making?
The event will aim to bridge research on environmental flows with implementation in policy and practices. Discussions will be held in the context of a new Swedish Water House cluster group on Environmental Flows.
The group aims to bring together Swedish and international actors who can contribute knowledge and competence to evolve the concept of environmental flows both in Sweden and internationally.
